There is a common myth in the audiophile world that the only way to upgrade your system is to replace it with the shiniest, newest equipment in the latest, high-end catalog. Jim Fuller has worked for decades proving that great sound is about more than gear.
Are you building a dedicated listening space from scratch with an unlimited budget? Jim can help you choose wisely. Are you restricted by your system footprint and your wallet? Jim can step in and make the tweaks necessary to maximize your listening experience. He has worked for decades in this business for some of the most prominent dealers and designers. But that’s not why he will talk to virtually anyone interested in improving the sound of their music system. He does it because this has been his life’s work — getting the best possible sound out of whatever system you already own.
As an audiophile, Jim has worked all over the audio industry. In the 1980’s he was a sales consultant, system designer and setup technician; in the 90’s he was co-founder of the South Charleston high-end retail shop Absolute Sound; in the 2000s he was a system engineer, designer, and turntable setup and tuning specialist for Goodwin’s High End. In the 2010s Jim worked for a famous turntable manufacturer as their production engineer, while simultaneously founding his own technical consulting business. And now in the 2020s he runs Fuller Sound as an exceptionally skilled audio consultant and a resourceful master technician. If you live in North America and had your dCS Ltd. Bartok, Rossini or Vivaldi updated to the new Apex DAC release, Jim likely did the upgrade in his shop.
Degreed in electronics, Jim understands high end audio from the ‘ground’ up and having him tune your system is the most cost-effective way to squeeze more nuance, detail and pleasure out of your music and the kit you entrust to amplify it. If you purchased a new badass turntable but aren’t completely sure it’s properly set up, or if you shelled out for brilliant new speakers but they don’t quite “disappear,” or if you’re having intermittent noise symptoms with your electronics, Fuller Sound is the renowned specialist to call for timely, professional, friendly help.
Jim will travel to you, evaluate, explain, and recommend solutions for virtually any audio issue, and will improve the sound of your system without you spending cash on more new components. For no more than the cost of a stack of nice records, Jim can often – usually – help tweak a system from good to very good… to great.

When Jim arrives to your home, the first thing he does is listen -- to you, to your system, and to your room.
Fresh ears catch what familiarity hides.
He'll note speaker and component placement, looking for visual clues that hint at untapped potential. Then he'll play a few test tracks, evaluate your source and amplification, and analyze speaker positioning from your room's sweet spot.
From there, it's about incremental adjustments -- small moves that unlock big differences; wider stereo separation, deeper soundstage, pinpoint imaging of voices and instruments, and a tonal balance that lets everything breathe.
The goal is simple: remove any obstacles between the music and you.
Fuller Sound is the factory-authorized U.S. service center for dCS, Ltd. of Cambridge, UK - makers of some of the finest digital audio components in the world, where world-class craftmanship meets leading edge technology. Beyond dCS, Jim offers component-level repair and factory-authorized modifications on select audio brands -- with quick turnaround and accurate estimates based on hands-on evaluation, not guesswork.
Fuller Sound specializes in setting up and optimizing the highest-end turntables and phono cartridges. He brings the full spectrum of precision analysis: mechanical alignment, electrical loading, speed accuracy, and advanced measurements including THD, frequency response, and tonearm resonance. He'll calibrate yours to perfection, then show you how to keep it there.

"I had a well-used, well-loved Quad pre-amp and Quad at the time had no US representation -- and the unit died. Turned out a key circuit board was done for with no easy fix-- and no ready custom parts. That didn't stop Jim, who analyzed the problem, researched his options and found the parts to fix the problematic elements. In the process Jim was a model of persistence and dedication -- on a problem he could as easily written off as too much trouble. That was years ago and the pre-amp purrs along. I founded and ran SOTA Industries (turntables, speakers) for a dozen years and I had no better, more professional, or savvier dealer than Goodwin's. Jim and Goodwin's make a great duo."

Jim Fuller is a consummate professional with deep knowledge of every aspect of audio. Jim’s skill, meticulous technique, and exacting standards were invaluable in setting up the Basis Audio A.J. Conti Transcendence turntable in my listening room. Jim combined this skill and uncompromising ethos with a willingness to do whatever it took to extract the greatest performance from the system. I also found him to be a very astute listener with keen insights into how to optimize the listening experience.

“One of the most knowledgeable and professional technical people I've had the pleasure to work with."
